Newsletter: March 2021

Hello farm friends,

We’re writing with some news and updates about Twin Birch Farm.

We launched this website for all of our communications and updates, including summer activities and events we plan on hosting.  Please check it out and let us know if you would like to see any special features added as we continue to enhance our online presence.

With the site, we also have a new way of contacting us via phone: 978-238-9952.  Please call for any questions or orders.  During the season, call ahead for curbside pick up.

2021 is the year we move to "year round growing."  We're starting with green leaf lettuce in the high tunnel -- a plastic covered structure that extends our growing season and allows us to start during the winter.  We also expect to have early tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers before we harvest from our fields over the summer.  We look forward to this new development on the farm and hope to offer fresh greens even if the temps outside are still chilly.

March and April are the months that we review the fields and organize our plans for upcoming season, order seeds and start seedlings.

Last year the grape harvest inspired us to add to our grapevines.  I trimmed the vines in December – there were some sunny days – and saved off the clippings, set them in a bucket of water in the heated garage.  Wow, they sprouted, I have been watching them get bigger green leaves on bare sticks, could not wait for the weather to get warmer so I could plant them outside with hope they all become my success story of propagating my grapevines.

We have a new flock of chicks; they are Easter Eggers and are just so fun to watch.  They play, they sing and, of course, as most youngsters, they want to fly.  We worked on getting their new coop and “run” finished this week and will get them to enjoy upcoming warm days outside in about 2-3 weeks.

Please join me in celebrating this launch and many other endeavors, with your support, on the horizon.

Regards,

Shendel Bakal
